The 8th ISPCAN Asia-Pacific Regional Conference on Child Abuse and Neglect (APCCAN 2009) theme is 'Child Abuse and Neglect: Looking Through the Lens of Prevention' in recognition that preventing child abuse and neglect before it occurs is far more effective than responding after the harm has occurred.
Together as children, young people, adults, families, and governments, our collective voices and actions can advance the safety and wellbeing of our communities.
APCCAN 09 includes an exciting Young Participants Program (YPP) to broadcast the voices, visions and actions of young people aged 14 to 25 years, to the Asia-Pacific region. A youth-led program of activities has been developed to educate, engage and empower young participants on the importance of child abuse prevention, both locally and internationally.
If you register for the APCCAN YPP, you can:
A) Participate in a free ONLINE interactive program (14-25 years) linking you with the Face-to-Face participants
B) Attend the FACE-TO-FACE (F2F) program (18-25 years) in Perth, Western Australia (including a two hour YOUTH EVENT held on Sunday, 15 November 2009)
(Alternatively, if you are aged 18 years or over, you can opt to pay the registration fees and attend the full Conference academic program.)
NB: Conference registration fees are waived for those participating in the F2F component of the YPP, however accommodation and travel costs are not included. These costs must be covered by the young delegate or through sponsorship. Assistance with accommodation in Perth may be available if you are not being sponsored by another organisation.
What does the Online Program involve?
Can't attend the Conference in Perth in person? No problem!
You can take part in the free Online Program which will link you in with APCCAN's F2F young participants and other young people with the same passion for prevention across the Asia-Pacific. Together we can make a stand against child abuse and neglect.
Interested young people (14-25 years) from across the Asia-Pacific region can ask questions, share stories and have their say by taking part in:
- Online discussion threads with key Conference experts and delegates;
- Video gallery postings/threads of Keynote Conference Speakers;
- Audiovisual Conference forums including photos, podcasts and videos;
- Online opinion polls;
and, most importantly...
- Sharing your own videos, pictures, text and links to school, community and global projects, with people who are creating safer, friendlier places for young people to grow up in!
So if you're 14-25 years of age... get involved in the APCCAN Online Program by simply joining the interactive APCCAN Facebook group.
NB: Online participants must be aged 14 to 25 years as at 15 November 2009.
What does the F2F Program involve?
The F2F Program is designed for a small number of young people (approx. 20-30) who are able to attend the Conference in Perth. It will include the following:
Media Monitoring Workshop
Interested delegates will run a Conference Press Room as journalists, photographers, editors and website moderators, seeking stories, interviewing speakers/delegates and publishing material to the Online program, for other young people to see, hear and discuss.
Take part in the Media Hub where you will have access to the technology to enable you to communicate and inform those participating in the Conference Online Program. Each morning, interested delegates will produce a 'virtual newspaper' to update delegates on daily Conference proceedings.
F2F delegates will have access to audiovisual equipment to interview Conference speakers/delegates about their opinions and views on key issues and Conference experiences. Delegates will then develop a Conference documentary with the resulting footage, with the help of a youth filmmaker.
Leading youth engagement experts, the Youth Affairs Council of Western Australia (YACWA), will guide delegates in a media training workshop on the Sunday (15 November 2009) to prepare for the Media Monitoring component.
The Great Debate
Interested delegates can nominate to participate in a 1 hour debate facilitated by Conference MC, Julie McCrossin.
Selected panellists will be provided with a 2 hour Public Speaking training course (open to all YPP delegates) to quell those public speaking fears, and intensive support by a qualified youth worker to prepare for The Great Debate.
Response to Keynote Speakers
Selected delegates will be given an opportunity to respond to the five Keynote Speakers via questions or comments, with the assistance of YACWA.
Awards
YPP delegates will be given an opportunity to observe the broader Conference program and nominate presenters/sessions for awards. These awards would recognise:
- Youth friendly language used in presentation / workshop / poster
- Youth sensitive presentation / workshop / poster
- Youth friendly aspect of Conference
Group Discussion
Take part in creative and innovative focus groups, to discuss the themes and issues of the Conference with your fellow YPP delegates.
'Chill Out' Space
A dedicated space, complete with comfy couches and online access, will be provided for those delegates wishing to take a break from Conference commitments.
Meet & Greet
F2F delegates will take part in a 2 hour 'meet-and-greet' function on Sunday, 15 November, to network with other young delegates, plan out F2F activities, test equipment and discuss 'ground rules'.
